The City of Rochester Parks and Recreation department is in the process of building an Urban Forest Master Plan to guide the management and growth of the urban forest for years to come. The City and project team will host two virtual open house opportunities for community members to engage and learn more about the plan.
On November 19, 2020 there will be a 60-minute virtual session from Noon-1:00 p.m. and then another session from 6:30-7:30 p.m.. The sessions will cover:
- Project background and approach - provides an overview of the project partners, timelines, tasks, and outcomes and ends with an overview of the management planning process.
- Envisioning the future of Rochester's urban forest - uses interactive polls, live Q&A, and discussions relating to the future of the urban forest to answer questions such as "what would you like the City's urban forest to look like 10 years from now, 50 years from now, etc.?"
- The key issues and opportunities facing Rochester's urban forest - discusses existing and potential threats to the urban forest as well as the opportunities to enhance urban forest management, sustainability, and equity.
- Ways to get involved, project next steps - discusses the upcoming survey, additional community meetings, stewardship opportunities, and other ways to support the City's trees.
The Parks Department’s Forestry Division is responsible for the management of a comprehensive urban tree program, including the reforestation of park and boulevard areas and the maintenance of more than 100,000 boulevard and public property trees located on more than 4,500 acres. The Urban Forest Master Plan will create a shared vision and road map for Rochester’s trees that supports existing city policies and enhances the quality of life in the city.
To ensure a healthy future for Rochester’s trees, the City is developing an Urban Forest Master Plan (UFMP) in collaboration with PlanIT Geo’s urban forestry consultants. The plan will provide an integrated approach to preserving, sustaining, diversifying, and regenerating Rochester’s urban forest for many more generations to enjoy.
Information for these events will be available on the City's website.
