DEBRA DSOUZA MODERN EXPLORATION OF ANCIENT MOSAIC PRACTICES Opening Reception | Friday, March 1 | 6pm “Andamento” is the visual movement or rhythm produced by mosaic elements. Similar to the patterns formed by leaves, ridges in a tree’s bark, or a series of clouds in the sky. By leading the viewer through the contours, ebb and flow of the subject, a mosaic artist creates the feeling of a subject through choice of materials, colors and elements. My work is a combination of modern and ancient materials, still using stone, glass, hammer and chisel. I am dedicated to preserving the tradition of mosaic art, along with the techniques and materials used in the past. One must study and remember the past to be informed for the future. Debra DSouza is a lifelong Artist, born and raised in the upper Mid-West. She earned her BFA from the University of Wisconsin- Stout; where she served as assistant director at the Furlong Gallery and Gallery 234 coordinator for 10 years. Prior to this she owned and operated a fine art gallery/frame-shop in Rochester, MN. Her studies encompass many mediums, her passions is glass mosaic. It is often said “She paints with glass.” She recently finished a residency in Belgium and will attend another in Ireland this October. Debra is a member of SAMA (Society of American Mosaic Artists) and the Minnesota Mosaic Guild. Her mosaic art is featured in multiple local, regional and national exhibitions, and is in several permanent collections, including Mayo Clinic, Marshfield Clinic, Health Partners and Stanford University. Her work can be viewed at http://debradsouza.com. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund.
