Free Family Day: Celebrating Women in the Arts

Sunday, March 30 | 11 AM - 4 PM

Rochester Art Center invites the community to a special Free Family Day: Celebrating Women in the Arts on Sunday, March 30. This engaging event offers a fun and educational experience for all ages, highlighting the impact of women in the arts through interactive activities and inspiring conversations. Guests can enjoy a Collector’s Spotlight Tour with Ruth Klawiter, featuring architect-designed chairs from her personal collection, as well as hands-on art activities that spark creativity. Live bluegrass music by Down Home and Friends will begin at 2:30 PM. Light refreshments will be provided, making it a perfect day for families to explore, create, and celebrate together.

11:00 AM - 4:00 PM | Art Activities led by Women Artists in Rochester
Brooke Burch, born in Charlotte, NC, settled in Rochester by the age of 3. Her interest in fashion and art began at the early age of 5 when she sewed by hand, and she learned how to use her first machine with the help of her grandmother at the age of 11. Burch studied at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, completing an internship in New York City and studying fashion abroad in London, England at AIU-American Intercontinental University. Lisa Becker is an educator and multimedia artist deeply rooted in the natural world and the wider
community. Her work serves as a bridge between art and environmental advocacy, conveying messages of conservation and reverence for nature. Born and raised in the Midwest, she makes it a priority to reconnect with nature on a daily basis. Whether it's hiking through State Parks or simply digging around in her gardens, Lisa finds solace and inspiration in the great outdoors.

Amy Krause of A. Krause Studio is a Rochester-based artist whose body of work explores social justice issues, mental health advocacy, cultivating belonging, and connecting to her Korean American heritage. She has a degree in fine art painting from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire. She specializes in acrylic paint, watercolors, digital art, murals, and art classes. Krause has a passion for creating more diverse and inclusive spaces so that others can feel seen and be known. Her mission is to use art to build connections, foster growth, and promote healing. 1:00 PM | Collector’s Spotlight Tour: Ruth Klawiter’s Eye for Modern Chairs
Ruth Klawiter is a Registered Nurse at Mayo Clinic and a former nurse educator with a deep appreciation for both the art of healing and the art of design. She and her husband, Dave, live in Owatonna, MN, where they have spent years curating a remarkable collection of architect-designed chairs. Their passion for design extends beyond aesthetics—each chair in their collection carries a unique story, reflecting their adventurous pursuit of rare and iconic pieces. Through their collection, Ruth and Dave celebrate the intersection of function and artistry, showcasing the vision of architects who have redefined seating as sculpture.

Join us for a story reading that connects children’s literature to works of art in the galleries and celebrates the creativity and accomplishments of women in the arts.

2:30 - 3:30 PM | Musical Performance by Down Home and Friends
Down Home and Friends is a bluegrass and gospel group of musician friends from the Zumbrota, Kenyon, Cannon Falls area. Talented women like Teresa Walter, Kristi Jacobson, and Stephanie Edel make up this group, along with Joe Bly, Randy Hinzmann and others.

Rochester Art Center strives to be welcoming and accessible for all people. Guests are encouraged to arrive fragrance free. All spaces are wheelchair and stroller accessible. The building has an elevator and three flights of stairs. Personal care assistants are invited to view the galleries with their companion free of charge. Service animals are welcomed. There are two all gender restrooms located on the second floor. Diverse seating options are available in the galleries and during programs. A designated quiet space will be available on the 3rd floor.
