Drum is an emeritus member of the Minnesota-based artist group CarryOn Homes, whose mission is to raise awareness of immigration issues through art. When not in the studio, He is a full-time caregiver and works as an arts educator and occasional musician.

Preston Drum | "Bubbles"
On view June 4 – October 17, 2021

"Bubbles" is a site-specific installation in the Davies Gallery at Rochester Art Center that combines painting, sculpture, and video to create an immersive facsimile of an American domicile. Drawing dual inspiration from his son’s first word and the pervasive social condition the pandemic has brought upon us, Drum explores notions of domestic life inside a bubble. Through nonlinear storytelling, the events of a never-ending day are stitched together to create a portrait of family.

Land Acknowledgement from the Artist

In making artworks about the concept of “home,” it is my reverent duty to acknowledge that the Dakota, Sioux, Ojibway, Wahpekute, Wahpeton and Winnebago have for generations stewarded the lands and waterways of what are now the cities of Burnsville and Rochester, Minnesota. While my work does not directly address the struggles of native peoples and first nations, I honor and respect the relationship between these peoples and this land.
