Artist Bio
Preston Drum, was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, and earned a BFA from the Memphis College of Art in 2006 and an MFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2016. His paintings, sculptures, videos, and interactive installations explore notions of memory and performance through nonlinear storytelling. Drum’s work is often site-specific and collaborative in nature, framing the audience as a participant in the art. His work has been exhibited throughout the Midwest and Southern United States at venues such as the Jonathan Ferrara Gallery in New Orleans, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Walker Art Center. Drum is an emeritus member of the Minnesota-based artist group CarryOn Homes, whose mission is to raise awareness of immigration issues through art. Drum lives in the southern suburbs of the Twin Cities with his wife, children, and two small mutts. When not in the studio, he is a full-time caregiver and works as an arts educator and occasional musician.
Project Description
Bubbles is a site-specific installation in the Davies Gallery at Rochester Art Center that combines painting, sculpture, and video to create an immersive facsimile of an American domicile. Drawing dual inspiration from his son’s first word and the pervasive social condition the pandemic has brought upon us, Drum explores notions of domestic life inside a bubble. Through nonlinear storytelling, the events of a never-ending day are stitched together to create a portrait of family.
