Details
We begin with a 2-hour Mandala Design class. Once the designs are drawn, we will use our designs to create glass mosaic mandalas in a 2-day workshop. This experience is limited to adults 50+ years of age. No prior art experience necessary, just the openness to learn and have fun. You will learn how to draw a meditative mandala and then what it takes to create a glass mosaic. All drawing materials, as well as, use of tools and materials to finish your mosaic will be provided. (Handouts, assorted glass, prepared substrate materials, adhesive, grout.) All mandalas will be round in shape. Your individual mosaic mandala will vary in size from 8-14 inches in diameter. 2 Sessions are scheduled, both led by Debra D'Souza.

About the Instructor:
Debra was born and raised in the upper Midwest, where her creative soul still resided. She has a BFA in Studio Art with a painting emphasis. Although she has used many mediums to create, her favorite is glass. She has studied with master mosaicists world-wide. Her mosaic art is featured in multiple local, regional and national exhibitions, and is in several permanent collections, including Stanford University, Penn State, Health Partners, Mayo Health System and Marshfield Clinic. Last year she was awarded an artist residency in Ireland and continues to expand her knowledge and experience with mosaic.
Artist Statement:
As a child I knew I wanted to be an artist. I loved to draw, paint and be creative. I also was an observer, noticing the clouds, trees, water and just being aware of the world around me. I think this is why I love working with glass so much. It’s noticing all the beauty held within a single sheet. I like to say “I paint with glass”, I select the color, cut the shape and lay it in. Each mosaic I create has an artistic inspiration and personal connection. Although size and detail of design often dictate how long it takes to create, the ebb and flow of life can also influence my creative process. Hundreds of hours can go into creating each mosaic, some are a struggle and others just seem to build themselves. Either way, I love the creative mosaic process.
